WORKING ON THE WEBSITES

"Our site is turning out way better than I could have imagined. It has been amazing to see how although our stance on the issue may have been taken in so many different directions, somehow, they are related and can come together to make something great. ... I feel that even people who are not of our faith will be interested in our website. Our website can help so many and it is amazing to see how technology can be used for great things. Healing is not always easy but help and faith can be found throughout our website. Although this topic is very touchy for many, I feel that with the knowledge I have obtained I can better help the individual. I am not an expert, but I can be that friend who helps guide them to be healed and get the right help." Stefannia, Fall 2018

WORKING ON A TOPIC

"In the beginning, I was against the church with the topic of Gender and Identity. I thought that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints hated the LGBT community and thought they were all going to outer darkness. But after doing a lot of research because that was our topic for our website. I found out that the church doesn't hate anyone. They believe that having thoughts about wanting to be with the same sex is a trial and not a sin. It becomes a sin when you act of the feeling. That's why it's so hard for people with that trial. After re-reading my journal entry #3, I realized that I had a lot of hatred going into this topic because I didn't want to learn the church's view. I thought that I already knew what the church believed. Turns out, I only knew what people in my ward thought was true. I have definitely learned that I need to research before I make an opinion. ... my testimony has grown so much since the beginning of the semester. At least on the topic of Gender and Identity. This class has helped me to believe that this church is true." Brooke, Fall 2018

LOOKING BACK ON THE COURSE, WHAT STANDS OUT TO YOU THE MOST AND WHY?

"Looking back ... two things that stood out to me the most were creating something public (website) and the topic. The making something public stood out to me because that meant I had to make sure my work was not only correct, but also make sure that someone could feel the spirit while on our website. The topic stood out to me because I didn’t really know my topic at first, but now I have a much greater sense of my topic. ...

I learned that working with a team is so important and that it can change the project. With a team, you can get different perspectives and opinions, and also feel the spirit through members

of your team. I also learned how to be a better leader, which is something I can use in the future." Haley, Fall 2018

ADVICE FOR FUTURE STUDENTS

"Other teams working on this project would do well to know Google docs work really well for collaborating and editing material before posting it on a site. Also, reserving study rooms is super helpful, because then you don’t waste time looking for a place to work. ...
The cohesion of our group was awesome and pleasantly surprising.  ... Having a supportive team made everything better. It makes the project feel like a team effort
and not just pieces by individuals that get thrown together." Lauren, Fall 2018

DEALING WITH A TRIGGERING ISSUE

"This project took me some time to accept and I struggled to adequately express my feelings. I felt that it was difficult to write about over a decade’s worth of negative experiences. I knew that the topic of abuse was not one that I typically chose to address on a regular basis. I think this assignment has changed my way of thinking and reacting to this subject. I realized that I have the ability to share my story with others to help them overcome the challenges that they face. I want to have a positive impact and make a difference in the lives of others." KJ, Fall 2018

(Special note: this student created a video in conjunction with the project that dealt with her childhood abuse and her testimony of the Savior's help in finding healing)

IMPRESSIONS OF THE PROJECT

"I was better able to understand those who struggle with depression.  I feel like I can help them better.  It was a good eye-opener." -Jericho

"I was able to connect the gospel doctrine and the struggling topics, which I've never have done before.  It was refreshing to see that Heavenly Father knows how to heal us and that he is always on our side."  -Julie

"An underlying message in all that we researched is that love is required for healing. That love needs to be a two-way road with no exceptions. Jesus Christ is our prime example of this quality of love and He can heal any wounds."  -Hunter

"I liked being able to further understand the struggle of others around me who are facing these trials.  I think I know how to help them." -Meghan

"It helped me to know how to reach out to those in need, and be there when they are going through these challenges" - Lexi
